A crash involving a car and an SUV in Newport Beach left two people dead on Tuesday evening, Dec. 8.

The collision happened near South Pelican Hill Road and Newport Coast Drive at about 7:45 p.m., Newport Beach police spokeswoman Heather Rangel said. An SUV occupied by a single motorist collided with a car carrying a man, a woman and three minors.

The man and woman were seriously hurt, and pronounced dead at the scene of the crash, Rangel said. Information on any other potential injuries was not immediately available.

The driver of the SUV waited for police to arrive and cooperated with authorities, Rangel said.

Further information regarding the crash and what led up to it was not immediately available.

Southbound Newport Coast Drive was closed while crash investigators worked at the scene of the collision Tuesday evening.
